A judge in Indiana has settled a years-long debate as to what exactly constitutes a sandwich, ruling that tacos and burritos qualify as Mexican-style sandwiches. The battle began when restaurateur Martin Quintana tried to open a taco restaurant in the Quintana strip mall. However, the Planning Commission rejected his bid based on a prior agreement restricting the facility to only restaurants serving "made-to-order or subway-style sandwiches."
However, Judge Craig J. Bobay ruled in Quintana's favor, declaring that the original written commitment did not specify American cuisine and that establishments serving Greek gyros, Indian naan wraps, or Vietnamese banh mi would also be permitted. The judge's heroic ruling stated that "tacos and burritos are Mexican-style sandwiches," adding that the agreement allowed for a diverse array of sandwich styles.
